How to become an Ascribed

Fr. Founder does not wish that we engage in asking people for ascription, it must come from them. It is the result of wanting to seek perfection together with other Christians (religious and lay people alike), using the means provided by the Church and, in the Church, by the Institute of Charity in particular.

Anyone wishing to become an Ascribed can apply, usually to a Rosminian religious or an Ascribed member. He/she will have to go through a period of "first probation", lasting about 6 months during which ascription will be explained and all the duties and the rewards for being an ascribed. The end is always the same: "You must be perfect like your Father in heaven is perfect", one must seek to become a better person, a better Catholic every day by doing perfectly all our duties and by a life of prayer, with the help of other like-minded persons.

Those who seek ascription are usually Christians who have come to know the Rosminians and/or the spirituality of Blessed Antonio Rosmini. It is up to the individual to seek, in prayer, admission to the Ascription, knowing that Ascription will make the person a member of the Institute of Charity, part of the Rosminian Family world-wide.

Reception need not be associated with a Mass. A little "liturgy of the Word" with a homily and concluded with the formula of reception could be an alternative. Reception is a private, not a public event.'

If more than one postulant is being received, the wording is correspondingly pluralised, but the response in the singular, "I do", should be retained.

The local director addresses Fr. Provincial, or his delegate:

ALL: I do

(The Celebrant now addresses the postulant(s))

CELEBRANT: N., the Institute of Charity into which you request entry, rests on four pillars: Faith in Divine Providence, the Grace of Jesus Christ, Justice, and Love of God. Are you ready to make these the pillars of your daily life, as desired and lved by our Blessed Founder, Antonio Rosmini?

CELEBRANT: Gospel perfection consists in the practice of the precept of charity. This single precept is directed to two objects: God and our neighbour.

Love of God is expressed by fidelity to His will and adoring Him in spirit and truth.

Love of neighbour is shown in a practical way by doing all we can to help our neighbour in his material, intellectual and spiritual needs.

N., do you wish to embrace this life of ardent charity, striving to love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength and your neighbour as yourself?

CELEBRANT: Praise and thanks be to God who has placed in your heart the call to the life of perfection in our Institute. The Institutes welcomes you with all love and undertakes to accompany you, sustaining and helping you to attain the end in view: the salvation of your soul through perfect love and freedom from sin.

(Where there is more than one Postulant, the following question is addressed to each individually)

N., do you desire to become an Ascribed member of the Institute of Charity?

CELEBRANT: As a sign of our mutual undertaking to follow Christ, receive the patent of Ascription to the Institute of Charity which I deliver to you on behalf of Fr. James Flynn, General Superior of the Institute. Receive also a copy of Rosminian Spirituality which contains much of the spiritual teaching of Blessed Antonio Rosmini.

May our Lady of Sorrows, venerated by Father Founder and dear to our Institute, accompany you on your way to the perfection of charity proclaimed by her divine Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns for ever and ever.

ALL: Amen
